چکیده

Use of disappearance data as proxies for actual consumption causes inconsistent estimates of own-price retail demand elasticities. A system of equations describing consumer, processor, and producer behavior is used to consistently estimate the retail demand elasticity for beef using available data while avoiding the restrictive assumption of fixed input proportions implicit in disappearance data. This approach yields an estimate of the own-price retail demand elasticity for beef of -0.45, which is more inelastic than the estimate (-0.66) obtained using a traditional approach. The methodology is applicable to other food commodities for which disappearance data serve as proxies for actual consumption.

Allowing for never and episodic consumers when correcting for error in food record measurements of dietary intake

Food records, including 24-hour recalls and diet diaries, are considered to provide generally superior measures of long-term dietary intake relative to questionnaire-based methods. Despite the expense of processing food records, they are increasingly used as the main dietary measurement in nutritional epidemiology, in particular in sub-studies nested within prospective cohorts. Food records are...

Weak Separability Testing And Estimation Of Selected Food Commodities Demand System In Urban Households Of Iran (Case Study of: Citrus Fruits, Cucurbits and Vegetables)

The separability of consumer desires is a necessary and sufficient condition for multi-stage budgeting and Collectivization is consistent of commodity where costs are allocated between edible groups using price indices and intergroup allocations are made independently of other groups. Given the high share of Citrus fruits, Cucurbits and vegetables types (29/5% percent of household food and beve...

The Theory and Econometrics of Health Information in Cross-Sectional Nutrient Demand Analysis

Understanding the role of health information in food and nutrient demand has become an important issue over the last decade. Endogeneity and measurement error are two empirical problems that are inherent in this type of analysis. While some type of instrumental variables estimation would appear the obvious solution, this paper provides several theoretical and empirical reasons why this is not t...

Implications of a new dietary measurement error model for estimation of relative risk: application to four calibration studies.

Food records or 24-hour recalls are currently used to calibrate food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) and to correct disease risks for measurement error. The standard regression calibration approach requires that these reference measures contain only random within-person errors uncorrelated with errors in FFQs. Increasing evidence suggests that records/recalls are likely to be also flawed with s...

Predicting and correcting bias caused by measurement error in line transect sampling using multiplicative error models.

Line transect sampling is one of the most widely used methods for animal abundance assessment. Standard estimation methods assume certain detection on the transect, no animal movement, and no measurement errors. Failure of the assumptions can cause substantial bias. In this work, the effect of error measurement on line transect estimators is investigated. Based on considerations of the process ...
